Poorly written. Ignores many elements of Hanzeatic history: Gotland, Danzig, Tallin, dealings with Teutonic Knights order, etc. However, contains nice pieces about relationship of Hanza with the Holy Roman Empire and internal Lubeck/Bremen relationships. Marek DobkeProduct details

The Hansa Towns Helen Zimmern Helen Zimmern 9781494446291 Books Reviews
It's interesting to read a text old more than 100 years. People just don't write like this these days!
I used it as an introduction, and for that purpose it served very well.
Now I will buy something up-to-date because it has attracted my attention even more.
The book is old as far as the publishing year is concerned but actually the picture that it depicts of teh Hansa Towns and especially of Lord Novgorod the Great is real within the latest archeoligcal and historiographical frames. The lòanguage is linear but a rigrous one even tho I would have much appreciated if the author had added a bibliography.
Excellent product, fast service.
Scholarship may well have moved on considerably since the publication of this book, but I found it a very readable introduction to thi srea of history of which I knew little.
The book could use a modern editor and a modern historian would probably tell parts of the story differently, but I liked the book. There is a long list of illustrations in the table of contents, but none of them appear in the version. Having them would have been good,
This book reflects the time in which it was written...the 19th Century...in style and attitude.
While dated it is informative about a period in history of which I knew little. The author
seemed informed and had done considerable research. Considering the price, it was free,
I thought it very worthwhile for anyone desiring information about the Hanseatic League.
She didn't have available the many resources we have today to write the book but it still is a good overview of the Hanseatic League. Of course when she wrote it the League had just officially ended only about 30 years before which means there were still people alive who were in the Hansa. And that's cool.
Poorly written. Ignores many elements of Hanzeatic history Gotland, Danzig, Tallin, dealings with Teutonic Knights order, etc. However, contains nice pieces about relationship of Hanza with the Holy Roman Empire and internal Lubeck/Bremen relationships. Marek Dobke
